Carl joined Worden Thane
as an attorney in 1987 after working here as an
intern during law school. He graduated from Montana
State University in Bozeman in 1984 (B.S. in
Business) and the University of Montana School of
Law in 1987 (J.D., with high honors). He is admitted
to practice before all state and federal courts in
Montana as well as the United States Court of
Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Carl is a member of
the Defense Research Institute, the Montana Defense
Trial Lawyers Association, the American Health
Lawyers Association, and the National School Boards
Association's Council of School Attorneys. He serves
on the Board of the State Bar of Montana's Lawyers'
Fund for Client Protection (1990 - present; chair,
2001 - 2006). His legal practice primarily
involves
medical
malpractice defense,
hospital
and healthcare law,
water
rights,
real
estate, general
civil and
commercial litigation,
business
transactions,
workers'
compensation,
insurance defense, and
school
law.
Carl is a fourth generation Montanan who was born in
Cut Bank, Montana and raised on a farm
several miles south of town, near the farm and ranch
established by his maternal grandparents. His
Mendenhall ancestors can be traced to Mildenhall,
England in the 1200's to the 1500's and then the
United States beginning in the late 1600's in
Pennsylvania. Carl's paternal
grandparents homesteaded in eastern Montana on the
Big Dry and then moved to the Bitterroot Valley
north of Darby when Fort Peck Reservoir flooded the
old homestead in the 1930's.
Carl is an active member of the Kiwanis Club of
Missoula (Board of Directors, 1992-2002; Kiwanian of
the Year, 2002) and is a past officer and Exalted
Ruler (1995-1996) of the local Elks Lodge. In their
spare time, Carl and his wife Carla enjoy attending
sporting and school related events for their two
children. They also enjoy sports, camping, and fishing.
