Peter S. Dayton’s
practice focuses on a wide range of
real
estate
matters, including purchase and sale transactions,
subdivision and development activity, commercial
leasing, lending and financing issues, easement and
access issues, 1031 exchanges, and conservation
easements. He also handles many
business
transactions and helps clients with the formation
and operation of for-profit and tax-exempt entities.
Peter frequently presents state-wide continuing
education seminars to lawyers and other
professionals on subjects including commercial
leasing; easement law; drafting easements; public
road law; subordination, attornment, and
non-disturbance agreements; structuring complex real
estate and business transactions; preparing closing
instruction letters; handling transactions which
involve stacked contracts for deed; and developing
forms for real estate and business transactions.
Peter joined the firm in 1994, and is a shareholder
in the firm. Before joining the firm, he was a
partner in the law firm of Tawney & Dayton. He
received his J.D. degree from the University of
Pennsylvania Law School in 1981, and his BA from
Montana State University in 1974. He grew up in
Bozeman, but has lived in Missoula since 1985.
Peter has served on the board of directors of the
Missoula Symphony Association and the Missoula
Whitewater Association. He recently completed a
fifteen-year project to protect the land along the
Alberton Gorge on the Clark Fork River, a scenic and
popular section of whitewater about 40 miles west of
Missoula. He plays the violin in the Missoula
Symphony, and is a very active kayaker, backcountry
skier and ski mountaineer, snowmobiler, hunter,
hiker, and photographer.
