Jeremy is a third
generation Missoulian. Following graduation from
high school he joined the U.S. Navy and served in
the Pacific Theater for the final months of World
War II. Following discharge from the Navy, Jeremy
returned to Missoula. He graduated from the
University of Montana School of Law and was admitted
to practice in Montana. He began his career as a
solo practitioner in Missoula in June of 1951. While
maintaining his private practice he also was a
Deputy County Attorney serving as a prosecutor in
District Court in 1953. Later, Jeremy was appointed
as City Attorney (1958-1959). For ten years he was
an adjunct professor at U of M School of Law
teaching Trial Tactics and Labor Law.
In 1952 Jeremy was admitted to practice in the U.S.
District Court for the State of Montana. He was
assigned by both state and federal courts to
represent indigent defendants in criminal cases. He
was appointed to defend two cases in which the
defendants were charged with murder. Neither were
convicted. He has tried many civil cases in both
state and federal court.
Jeremy is also admitted to practice before the U.S.
Circuit Court of Appeals (9th Circuit) and the
Supreme Court of the United States. He is admitted
to practice before the National Labor Relations
Board, Interstate Commerce Commission and the
Montana Department of Transportation.
Jeremy is an elected Fellow of the American College
of Trial Lawyers. He has been listed for over ten
years in "The Best Lawyers in America." He has
maintained the highest rating in "Martindale Hubbell
Law Directory" for virtually his entire practice. He
is listed in "Chambers The Best Lawyers in America
for Business." He is a member of the American Bar
Association, the State Bar of Montana and the
Western Montana Bar Association (President 1968). He
is also a member of the Association of Defense Trial
Lawyers, the Montana Defense Trial Lawyers
Association, and Defense Research Institute. He is a
member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity.
Jeremy became counsel to the Employers Association
of Western Montana early in his career. Currently
President of the Association, his duties in this
position include representing member employers
concerning union organizing matters, negotiating
collective bargaining contracts and handling cases
before the National Labor Relations Board involving
certification elections, unfair labor practice
charges and advising on other employment law issues.
Jeremy was appointed by Governor Don Nutter as
Chairman of the State Department of Public Welfare,
(now the Department of Public Health & Human
Services) and reappointed for a second term by
Governor Babcock serving for a total of eight years.
Later Governor Stan Stevens appointed him as the
attorney member of the State Board of Health &
Environmental Sciences for a four-year term. He also
served as counsel to the Missoula County Airport
Authority almost from the beginning of the Authority
for a period of approximately twenty years. All of
the foregoing service was while still maintaining a
full-time private practice.
Jeremy was a Director of the Missoula Bank of
Montana, the Helena Bank of Montana, and is a member
of the advisory board of the Missoula Wells Fargo
Bank.
In keeping with a desire to actively contribute to
the community, Jeremy has served as President of
Missoula Kiwanis Club, Western Montana Bar
Association, Missoula Symphony Association, Missoula
Area Chamber of Commerce and the Missoula Chamber
Ambassadors. He is currently a member of Missoula
Rotary Club. He also served as District Chairman of
the Boy Scouts of America for two terms. He has
served pro bono as an attorney for Crime Victim
Advocates, an organization in Missoula providing
attorneys to represent indigent women before the
courts in obtaining Orders of Protection against
mental and physical abuse by males. Jeremy has been
recognized by the CVA as pro bono attorney of the
year in 2003 and 2005.
